Life Care Centers of America’s Whatever It Takes And Then Some program honors associates who go beyond their job descriptions in caring for residents, their families and fellow associates. Here are three of the inspiring stories from our April 2019 winners:
Diana Barcena, nutrition coordinator at Life Care Center of Hilo, Hawaii, came up to a resident’s family to offer her condolences after the resident’s passing and found out that the social services department was having trouble contacting the resident’s church. The family wanted to have a minister from the church provide bedside services. Without being asked, Barcena called other church members of the same congregation until she could locate a minister. The family was very grateful for their loved one to receive services from a familiar face.
Natasha Hargrove, social services director at Life Care Center of Valparaiso, Indiana, befriended a resident who never had the opportunity to learn to read and write at an early age. Hargrove decided to teach the resident, and they have been meeting on Fridays. She gives the resident several new words to learn over the weekend, and they review them on Mondays.
April Tinsley, licensed practical nurse at Life Care Center of Ooltewah, Tennessee, noticed that a resident was sad because she knew none of her family would be coming to celebrate her birthday with her. Tinsley got the patient some flowers and a card and sang to her to recognize her special day.
